Often, we think of Human Trafficking as being on the streets of large cities. This is no longer true. Many adults involved in Human Trafficking hide online under the cloak of the internet. CSEC is out-of-control on the internet and often, mom and dad are unaware of what is taking place on their child's cellphone

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Atlanta, Georgia, is the No. 1 major hub of human and sex trafficking in the United States.
Georgia has been identified as having one of the highest CSEC rates and economies in the United States
GEORGIA SCORED AN F IN THE 2022 SHARED HOPE INTERNATIONAL REPORT CARDS (Institute for Justice & Advocacy). This grade was given based on failures in enacting the minimum fabric of laws needed to address child sex trafficking.
Last year, 387 confirmed victims of CSEC. The majority of the victims were 6th - 8th grade girls.
An average of 100 children under the age of 18 are involved in CSEC every 24 hours in Georgia with an average of three
transactions per child.
Children can be the target of commercial sexual exploitation of children whenever they have access to a smartphone and the internet. This means in their homes and in their schools--both are places parents think their children are safe!

Children as young as elementary school are selling sexually explicit photos and videos online to adults in exchange for money, gift cards, and other items of value. When these children text or e-mail the adult that they are over the age of 18, the adults are typically not prosecuted because the adult has proof that he/she believes the child was not a minor. An attorney in my local District Attorney's office told me that these adults are not usually prosecuted because the adult can prove that they thought the child was at least age 18.
The most obvious lure to the children is to get money or gift cards. Our family member, at age 15, had approximately $8.000 transferred into her bank account. A law enforcement agent told us that $8,000 is "small potatoes," because many of the teenagers are making $100,000 or more per year.
Many parents are checking their child's phone on a regular basis, but there are apps and other ways that this activity can be hidden on a phone. Additionally, a child making thousands of dollars can afford to purchase a second phone! Parents do not realize that this is going on right under their noses. Our family certainly did not know!
Parents and other adults need to be taught how to check electronic devices of their young family members for CSEC transactions!

Our young family member had over 200 photos and videos in her cellphone, ipad, and online. There were text messages from the adult men involved asking her to meet with them. These adults asked her many times over many months to meet them. Thankfully, she never agreed to meet them. If she had, we might never have seen her again!
Parents and caregivers need to learn everything that they can about how to perform deep checks on the cellphones of the children in their homes. Also, parents need to put protective applications on the cellphones of all children in the home. Do your research and find what will protect your children. Watch this website for future posts on applications to protect your children by filtering information coming into or from the child's cellphone.

Most of the time, this law is not used in internet commercial sex transactions against children to prosecute the adults involved. Looking at the title of the law, one would not think that Human Trafficking would apply to transactions over the internet, but it does. In transactions with a child under the age of 18, if an adult is found guilty, the punishment is a minimum of 10 years and a maximum of 20 years!
